Balearic government honors Liz and Reinhard Mohn
The government of the Balearic Islands has recognized Liz and Reinhard Mohn for their commitment to promoting culture. Liz Mohn accepted the Gold Medal of the Balearic Islands from Francesc Antich i Oliver, president of the islands, before an audience of 1,500. The Mohns received the prize for establishing the Can Torró library in Alcudia and for their efforts to promote reading in Spain.
moreLiz Mohn is the vice-chair of the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Executive Board and its Board of Trustees. In addition, she has served as president of the Spain-based Fundación Bertelsmann since October 2005.

From Theory to Praxis: Realigning the EU's growth and sustainability strategy
On February 23rd, the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the World Future Council (WFC) jointly held the last out of a set of three debates in the European Parliament dealing with the issue of "Rethinking Well-being. How to keep Europe on the Sustainability Track." The panel series was hosted by three Members of the European Parliament: Rebecca Harms, Jo Leinen, and Sirpa Pietikäinen. At a first meeting in the middle of January participants had discussed the need to go beyond the current GDP-related growth paradigm and to develop a more comprehensive and sustainable understanding in which ways future economic models should contribute to human well-being. The second meeting focused on the question of how to increase the political impact of measurement tools aiming to capture and assess sustainable development in our changing world. During the final panel, the participants focused on possible implications of alternative concepts of well-being on the EU's future growth and sustainability strategy.

Three proposals for a new and more effective Lisbon strategy
The EU's Lisbon Agenda is now a thing of the past. At its summit tomorrow, Europe's heads of state and government will discuss the Union's new long-term growth strategy. A higher level of commitment will be required if it is to prove more successful than the now-defunct agenda.

Financial Crisis: Lithuania Looks to High-Tech
Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius concluded on 5 February 2010 a five-day visit to the United States by speaking to a select gathering of World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), corporate and media representatives at the Bertelsmann Foundation North America. The prime minister, accompanied by Finance Minister Ingrida Simonyte, stressed his government's goal to create in Lithuania and throughout the Baltic region a high-tech service hub.

The second Policy Report is online: Security in the Black Sea Region
Regional tensions, natural resources and geopolitical rivalries make the Black Sea region a strategic but sensitive area. In the absence of cooperative structures able to contain conflict, security threats ranging from interstate conflicts to illegal trafficking have emerged. Mitat Çelikpala, Associate Professor of International Relations at TOBB Economy and Technology University in Ankara, is the author of the second of a series of four policy reports presented by the Commission on the Black Sea. Following Çelikpala, the region is politically, historically and geographically divided.
