Dialogue and Action I: Civic Engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility and Political Leadership

Hotel Ritz, Madrid - November 23 / 24, 2006

On the 23rd and 24th of November 2006 in the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, the Fundación Bertelsmann inaugurated its series of conferences, "Diálogo y Acción" (Dialogue and Action), which will bring together internationally renowned experts each year to discuss matters concerning the Spanish society. "Civic Engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility and Political Leadership" were the central themes of last year's series.

The Fundación Bertelsmann initiated the "Diálogo y Acción" series as a result of the process of change that Spanish society is currently undergoing. Traditional social structures are dissolving and the state cannot resolve all of society´s problems on its own. There is therefore a need for fundamental debate about the new distribution of responsibilities between the state and economic and social actors. How do our basic values of freedom, competition, solidarity and goodwill relate to each other in the context of a globalized world?
All social forces must cooperate to resolve the pending problems and guarantee the future of our society. Dialogue is required in order to find solutions.
The future of our democratic societies essentially depends on the development of an active civil society, in which individual citizens, as well as organizations, companies and politicians, make a responsible commitment on behalf of the common good.
The Fundación Bertelsmann wants to contribute to society, by working together with other socially minded organizations and experts. Based on our commitment to the common good we are outlining reforms that, in our opinion, are necessary for society to ensure its long-term viability. As an independent institution, we are devoted to promoting dialogue on civic responsibility.
